Do you need Collagen?

Normally the first thing you think about when you hear Collagen is that it can help with skin issues and hair loss and even slow the aging process. Collagen is a protein that is a building block for your hair, skin and nails. And, of course, as you age, your body’s ability to produce collagen slows and therefore your body doesn’t have as much access to collagen to keep your skin, nails and hair healthy. Oral supplementation with collagen has been shown to improve the appearance of all of these.

Collagen has been found beneficial in repairing issues in your gut, which houses more than 3$ of your immune system. If your gut is not functioning properly, you can bet your body surely is not. The walls of your intestines are made of “villi” and these villi are made from collagen in your body. When you add collagen to your diet you can actually seal up the leaks and help your body with new tissue growth and better health at the cellular level.

Glycine is one of the ingredients contained in collagen and this amino acid is one of the building blocks of protein. Your body can make glycine from other ingredients in your body but as your collagen levels decrease with age then so too does the level of glycine. This amino acid also supports your liver during the detox process, which is how the body rids itself of the toxins we are exposed to in our daily lives. ‘

Your bones are also about 1/3 collagen and this is what gives them the flexibility we enjoy. Collagen supplementation has been shown very helpful in the increase of bone mineral density of your bones and therefore beneficial to persons impacted by osteoporosis. It is also very helpful to the health of your joints as collagen provides the lubrication necessary for your ligaments, tendons and joints to glide and move with ease. As your body’s natural ability to produce collagen slows, as you age, you may lose some mobility as your joints become painful, stiff and/or swollen. Collagen supplementation has been shown to help decrease joint pain and improve mobility.

Do your research and make sure you find a good source of collagen if you decide to add it to your regime. I have added a joint supplement that contains 500 mg of collagen and have been taking it daily for more than a year now. The benefits have been quite profound in my case. I would hope you have such great results.
