The practice of using generic drugs instead of the original brand name drug saves patients billions of dollars each year. At this point, some 80% or more, of prescriptions filled in America's pharmacies are generics. It has been estimated that you can save up to 65% on your prescriptions by using generics. FDA reports have concluded that generic drugs can be trusted to provide the same quality as the brand name but for less money. Generic drugs are tested by the FDA just like the brand name drug. The concluded that that generics can be used the same reason and in the same applications. The FDA only approves a generic if is the same as the brand name which means: method of ingestion, active ingredient, strength, use and effect, testing standards and the ability to reach the patients’ bloodstream in the same time and to the same extent.

There are differences between generics and brand name. They may be a different color or shape and come in different packaging. Generics can also add flavoring and preservatives that are different from the brand name and as long as the FDA considers the additives safe. The expiration date can be different with generics as well.

Some states have restrictions against generics for some drugs. There is a narrow margin between safety and toxicity with some widely used drugs. Additional monitoring while taking these medications is usually required.

Some health insurance carriers require the use of generics when they are available to reduce prescription drug costs. If the brand name drug is used instead the patient may end up paying the difference in cost, which can be very costly.
